Can I skip the six minutes?
Your mail came in two piles this week. The eye pigment took one, gelatin the other.
Three of them got picked. Each one had a trial behind it… or it would not have made the cut. One sent me back to the lab notes twice.
Here is what came back.

// The Swap
“Kale makes me gag and it always has. Is there a way to get that pigment up that I can live with?” · Ray, 61
Yes, and it comes in a shell. A Tufts team put pistachios up against the usual greens. Thirty six adults ate two ounces a day. Mean age was 59.5 years. All came in with low pigment. By week six it had gone up at each point on the retina they read. And that gain held at week twelve. Those who ate as they always had saw no change.

// The Load
“Can I drink the gelatin on a rest day and leave out the six minutes?” · Dana, 58
You can. But the drink on its own has little to aim at. Eight men took 15 g of gelatin with vitamin C. They drank it one hour out from six minutes of rope skips. Their marker for new collagen came in at twice the blank drink. Eight men is a thin group. One marker is not a healed tendon. So hold it loose. Keith Baar’s lab reads the load the same way. Short bouts, under ten minutes, then six hours of rest. Pull tells the tissue where to send the parts.

// The Bridge
“Does the pigment in the eye do a thing for the brain, or does it stop at the retina?” · Marek, 64
It does not stop there. The same two dyes sit in brain tissue as well as the retina. So a team in Georgia ran the eye and the mind side by side. Sixty two older adults took 12 mg a day for a year. The rest took a blank pill. Fifty one had full data at the end, at a mean age of 73.7. Pigment in the eye rose from 0.52 to 0.59. Flat in the blank group. Scores for hard attention and task switching both beat it… from a plant dye you can buy in a bag of nuts.

// What You Ran
THE GELATIN HOUR TOOK THE WEEK
Most of you picked the gelatin hour to run. The pigment swap came second. And calf work came third by a nose.

GREG, 62
Greg ran the gelatin hour for two weeks. He kept it plain… a scoop in his juice at eight. An hour on, he did slow calf raises off a stair. Three sets, and he was back in his chair inside six minutes. On the days his legs felt beat, he left it alone.
Two weeks is short. One man is not a trial. Still, he wrote in to say the stairs feel kind again. That earns a line here.
I gave it three weeks of my own before it went out. My take: the drink is the easy half. Those six minutes are the part that gets skipped. And they are the part that counts.

More than $20,000 a year goes out on deep research feeds. Hedge funds and biotech desks pay for the same ones. Each claim then gets held up to the first paper… not the press note. When a trial runs on eight men, you get told it ran on eight men.
Three questions, three trials, one man on a stair.
