A boy heard his name.
The ward was in Shanghai. Six children sat there with one dose each. A tiny window in the ear was the way in. Each kid was born deaf. One gene was at fault.
By week 26, five of the six could hear speech. Some of them held a chat with a parent. The Lancet ran the trial in 2024.
One gene went in… and sound came out.

Sound was the hard one to crack. Sight is the sense most of us lean on the most. And the eye holds a filter you can feed with food.
Here is the thing about that filter. It sits in labs… and your plate holds the same thing.

THE PIGMENT LOAD
At the back of the eye sits a small patch of gold. Two plant pigments make it: lutein and zeaxanthin. The body cannot build them from scratch. Blood has to haul them in from food.
That patch works like a pair of built in shades. It soaks up blue light. Edges stay crisp in glare.
|
|
Greens on the plate: a cup of cooked kale, spinach or chard on most days. |
|
|
Yolks as well: the gold in a yolk is the gold your eye wants. |
|
|
Fat with the greens: cook them in olive oil. These pigments need fat to get through. |
|
|
Play the long game: the trial that lifted contrast scores ran 16 weeks. |
|
|
Use the dusk test: clock how fast your eyes find the road after headlights sweep past. |
One trial gave 59 adults 12 mg of lutein a day. At week 16 their contrast scores beat placebo. Their glare scores did as well.

The food route has its own trial. Older adults with low pigment ate two to four yolks a day. Five weeks of that was linked to a rise in that gold.

SENSES CAN BE REBUILT
Three labs are doing it at the level of the gene. Here is where each one stands.

Old mice lost their sight to pressure in the eye. A Harvard team sent three genes into the retina. The target was the nerve cells at the back. Those cells got back the tag pattern they wore when young. Sight came back with it. That held in mice with high eye pressure. It held in mice old from age alone.

The ear work grew past those six kids in Shanghai. A trial of 42 people took the same class of shot. Ages ran from nine months to 32 years. Most of them gained hearing, and the gain held for 2.5 years. A day later the FDA cleared one of these therapies.

A mouse of 124 weeks is old… near 77 in our years. In San Diego, one lab dosed mice that old. The shot held those same three genes. They ran the genes in cycles, a week on and a week off. Treated mice then lived twice as long as controls. Frailty scores came out better as well.

None of the gene work is on a shelf near you. It lives in trials. The FDA has cleared one such shot so far. Your eye pigment is the part you can build with a fork.
I pay north of $20,000 a year for deep research desks. Hedge funds read the same ones. Most of what lands there fails my filter. My test starts with one ask: was it tried in people? By the way, I eat the yolks and greens myself. That runs five or six days a week.
Labs are rebuilding sight and sound in the clinic… and the gold in your eye takes food you can buy.
