He read five lines.
A man sat in a clinic chair. Thick black glasses rested on his nose. Under the retina of his blind eye sat a chip. It was 2 mm wide. The glasses threw a beam of light at it. And the chip turned that beam into sight.
Then he read the chart. Five lines of it. Letters that had been gone from that eye for years.
Sight is a thing science can hand back.

Most of us will never need a chip in the eye. But the same field has a plain version of the same job… and it runs on food.
Your eye builds its own filter. It is a dab of yellow pigment in the macula. Lutein and zeaxanthin are what you eat to make it. Dense pigment means less glare, and sharper edges in dim light.

The Pigment Load
A team at the University of Georgia gave 115 adults the two pigments each day for a year. Half got a placebo. The fed group took less of a hit from bright glare. And they came back faster from a flash of light.
So here is the plain way to feed that filter.

Load the greens: kale and spinach hold the most. Cook them in olive oil, since both pigments ride on fat. |

Add two yolks: in one 5-week trial, 2 to 4 a day raised eye pigment in older adults (Vishwanathan, AJCN, 2009). Yolk fat carries both. |

|
Hit the trial dose: 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin a day. Food or a pill both feed the same pool. |

|
Play the long game: blood levels climb for about six months, then flatten out. This is a slow build, not a quick one. |

Track one thing: on a night drive, count how long a set of headlights hangs in your eyes. |

That chip has a name: PRIMA. It is a 2 mm square, thinner than a hair. Think of a tiny solar panel under the retina. Glasses beam light in. The panel makes a spark. Cells that are left pass it on to the brain. Thirty-eight people had one put in at 17 sites. At one year, 84% could read again. Letters, words and numbers, with the blind eye.

Here is the wild end of the field. A Harvard team put three genes into the eyes of old mice. The genes wound the cell clock back to a young pattern. Nerve fibres grew again after a crush. And sight came back in old eyes. Same result in mice bred to mimic glaucoma.

THE FORK GETS THERE FIRST

I pay north of $20,000 a year for the research feeds that hedge funds read. Most of what lands there is junk. Four eye papers crossed my desk this month, and I cut two. Both were paid for by the firm that sells the pill.
The two that stayed had a placebo arm. Both used a dose you can buy. And the lab had no skin in the sale… which is a rare mix.
A chip in the eye is for a small group of people. Kale and yolks are for anyone with a fork. And the gap is smaller than it looks. Both aim at the same job: get more light to land where it counts.
Sight is not a fixed gift. It is a thing you feed.
